Founded by Rick Phillips, Phillips Lifestyles began by manufacturing heat pumps in the very early 1980s under the name Phillips Energy, Inc. Over the years the business evolved into a retail outlet and installer of heating & cooling products and fireplaces.
Rick was on the leading edge as the market moved away from wood toward gas fireplaces. As a licensed mechanical contractor doing HVAC work, it was only natural to sell, install and service the new gas fireplaces. Phillips Energy became the largest gas fireplace dealer in Northern Michigan.
Along the way, Rick uncovered a market for quality portable spas and pool tables. He opened a Grand Traverse Mall store in 1995 and a Gaylord store in 2003.
A new name and logo for the entire company debuted in 2005: Phillips Lifestyles. Additional products for game rooms, such as bars, bar stools, arcade games, shuffleboard and more were also added to the showrooms.
2005 also saw the company consolidate its two showrooms in Traverse City and move to a single location along Rt. 31 near Sam's Club. The Gaylord store remains on Otsego Avenue (old 27 South) across from K-Mart.
Rick's philosophy is that Phillips Lifestyles will sell only the top brand names like Brunswick, Bryant, Heat-N-Glo and Jacuzzi. These are quality products from manufacturers with reputations for investing in research & development and who stand behind their products.
